ECUADOR: Foreign minister resigns over Amazon project

The foreign minister, Fander Falconí­, tendered his resignation this week after differing sharply with President Rafael Correa over the ambitious environmental project Yasuní­. The government presented the project in mid 2009: it calls for the international community to stump up some US$3.6bn for Ecuador to leave oil deposits untapped in the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT) concession in the Yasuní­ biosphere reserve and national park in Ecuador's northern Amazon, which is thought to hold 920m barrels of crude [WR-09-22].
